last night, vancouver played host to the first show of the tour. the reaction from fans and media was very very positive as you can see on the concert’s review page. here’s a few quotes:
“last night jónsi, lead singer of sigur ros, kicked off his debut solo tour at the vogue theatre in vancouver on the same day his debut solo record, go, was released. the stars were seemingly aligned for a pretty amazing spectacle and that is exactly what burst from the elaborately adorned stage.” (a reminder)
“breathtaking. the best use of stage/lights/visuals i have ever seen. i cried, i laughed, i had a smile plastered on my face. truly amazing.” (andrea, fan)
“band members arrive onstage in the gloom of night. owls fly and wolves chase deer, leading us into the next song as floodlights reveal the remains of a ruined house cradled in the heart of a forest. and jónsi himself, dressed all in white and wrapped in coloured rags, backlit by the perfectly timed footlights fanning out, flowerlike. whistles and wolf call sound effects echo the effect of a gently decaying house, something warm and bright unfurling in your belly as you become more absorbed in the show.” (guttersnipenews.com)
“unlike anything I have ever seen before. truly unique and breathtakingly beautiful, this show was a stroke of pure genius. these gifted musicians deserved that standing ovation 10 times over. stunning vocals and unforgettable visuals.” (nadine, fan)
“from the moment jonsi and his band, a quartet of engaging multi-instrumentalists, rushed in, it was clear this was no sigur ros show. yes, there were cello bows; and yes, there were a thousand keyboards; and yes, they were playing instruments you’ve never seen before or will again. but from the first, bell-clear notes of “stars in still water” it was obvious we were seeing another, less crowded, corner of birgisson’s mind on display.” (spin.com)
“life altering.” (james, fan)
“it was at the fourth-song mark, the stunning “kolnidur”, that the performance took flight, almost literally, as animals ran and flew in a 3d effect across and through a backdrop, before the shroud fell to reveal a new set of bent, blacked-out windows, flickering at times like piano keyes or revealing trees peeking through. a wintry “tornado” and “sinking friendships” followed before birgisson surprisingly spoke: “thank you very much for coming,” he said in a thick, singsong icelandic accent. “this is our first show. so it is exciting for us also.” the crowd swooned.” (backstagerider.com)
“what a stunning visual and musical performance! jonsi has the voice of an angel. anyone who hasn’t got a ticket for one of his upcoming shows best get on it! it’s an experience you don’t want to miss out on.” (xanthe, fan)
